Getting Started

Your first session

Reaching out to a therapist is usually the hardest step, mostly because you cannot picture what happens next. So here is what happens next.

Reach out

Use the short contact form, or call or email directly. You do not need to explain your history; “I'd like to set up a consultation” is plenty. I follow up personally to find a time.

The consultation

You tell me a little about what is bringing you in; I tell you honestly whether I am the right fit. Ask me anything — how I work, fees, scheduling. If we are not the right match, I will point you toward someone who is. No obligation either way.

Your first session

Intake forms come ahead of time, so the hour is for talking. The first session is mostly me getting to know you: what is going on now, what has been tried, what you want to be different. You share at your pace, and nothing about a first session commits you to a second.

4

Usually weekly

Finding a rhythm

Most individual and couples work starts weekly. Psychoanalytic therapy meets two to three times per week; EMDR intensives are a single full day. We land on the rhythm together, and it can change as the work changes.

First Session Frequently Asked Questions

What if I don't know what to say?

That is common enough that I plan for it. People start with “I'm not even sure why I'm here, things just feel off,” and that is a fine place to start. Figuring out what is underneath it is my job to help with, not yours to prepare.

How much does it cost?

$180 for individuals, $200 for couples. I am private pay, and for weekly therapy I can provide a superbill for out-of-network benefits — often 60 to 100% reimbursement after your deductible. Sliding scale options may be available (not available for psychoanalytic treatment). The consultation is the right place to ask money questions plainly.

In person or online?

Either. The office is at 1330 N Logan St in Denver's Capitol Hill neighborhood, near Uptown; secure video works anywhere in Colorado. For online sessions you need a private space and a stable connection — a parked car counts more often than people think.
